Role of the Instructional Coach

Instructional coaches provide support to their teacher colleagues through:

Coaching
  • To engage and enhance self-directed learning: self-managing, self-monitoring, self-modifying
  • To assist in the analysis of and reflection on instructional practice
Collaborating
  • To solve instructional problems
  • To apply and test shared ideas; learn together
Consulting
  • To increase pedagogical and content knowledge and skills
  • To implement accepted practices and policies
Facilitating Professional Learning Communities
  • To learn protocols for discussion which foster inquiry, problem-solving, and reflection
  • To apply protocols to provide a safe environment in which to examine school data, instructional practice, and student work.
